How to Prepare Your Heater for Winter

An improperly maintained furnace can put the health, safety, and comfort of your family at risk. Every furnace should be serviced before it’s turned on for the first time each winter, as doing so reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, high energy bills, poor air quality, and an unexpected furnace failure in the middle of winter. You should call in professional HVAC technicians to perform these tasks, as trying to do them yourself can be dangerous and may also void the manufacturer’s warranty. The HVAC technician will do each of the following tasks:

Replace the air filter.

Every furnace has an air filter that needs to be replaced every one to three months. Getting it replaced promptly will help keep dust and allergens out of your indoor air. Ask your technician about the type of air filter you’re currently using, and consider whether it’s time for an upgrade. The HVAC technician might recommend switching to a HEPA filter, electrostatic filter, or pleated filter to improve energy efficiency and air quality.

Inspect the burner flames.

The burner flames will be safely activated during the annual furnace inspection. During this part of the inspection, the HVAC technician is checking the color of the flames. If they’re yellow, the burners are dirty. A blue flame is ideal.

Clean the vents and ducts.

The technician will remove the vent covers, and then suction out all of the dust and grime from the ducts. Keeping the ductwork clean is important for reducing the amount of dander, dust, mold, and pollen in the air.

Inspect the blower belt.

Belt-driven blowers sometimes require adjustments or replacement. The technician will check the belt for signs of damage from wear and tear, including fraying or cracking.
